Both locations will give students insight into India’s mixed private and public healthcare system.

What will I actually do during a medical elective in India?

Our Medical Electives in India are observation-based. You will shadow doctors and nurses during ward rounds, outpatient clinics, and departmental rotations. While doing this you will be learning how patients are assessed and diagnosed. Depending on your experience levels and hospital guidelines, you may assist with basic tasks under supervision.

Which hospital departments can I observe during my placement in India?

Departments vary by hospital, but commonly include general medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, cardiology, neurology, orthopedics and emergency medicine. Participants can usually request their own preferences, although final allocations depend on availability and placement duration.

Do I need prior medical experience to join a medical elective in India?

Not always. Some placements are open to pre-med students with no clinical experience, while others require you to be currently studying or recently graduated in medicine or nursing. Med Trips will assess your background and will help to place you in a programme that matches your academic level and learning goals.
