Timing your Australian elective
Australian medical schools break for summer between mid-November and February — the peak elective season worldwide. Hospitals fill up fast for the summer window, so we recommend confirming your placement by 15 September to lock in your first-choice destination, dates and specialty. Popular start weeks are late November, early December and mid-January.
University sign-off — we handle the paperwork
Every Australian medical school runs its own elective approval process (Melbourne, Sydney, UNSW, Monash, Adelaide, UQ, JCU, Notre Dame, Wollongong, Deakin, Newcastle, Flinders, Griffith, Bond, Curtin, Macquarie, WSU, Tasmania, ANU). We provide everything your uni’s elective office needs:
- Host hospital confirmation letter naming your consultant supervisor
- Programme scope-of-practice document
- Insurance and indemnity summary
- Signed elective placement agreement
- Supervisor CV / credentials on request
Send us your uni’s elective form and we’ll complete and return it within three working days. Full details on our sign-off page.

Every destination is hosted by an experienced local partner team we’ve worked with for years.
Placement lengths — 1 to 12 weeks
Your Aussie summer break gives you up to 12 weeks. Most students choose 4–8 weeks to leave time for travel; some do a 1–2 week mini-elective inside a longer trip. You can extend or shorten week-by-week at booking, and combine specialties across two destinations if you want a broader experience.
Pricing in AUD
Every price on Med Trips converts live to Australian dollars, updated daily. A small booking fee holds your placement; the balance is due 45 days before you start. Bank transfer, card and PayPal are all accepted from Australia — or spread the balance across 0% interest instalments.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need MDANZ approval to do an elective overseas?
No. MDANZ approval applies to placements at Australian hospitals. Overseas electives are approved by your own medical school’s elective coordinator.
Will this count toward my clinical hours?
Most Australian medical schools recognise overseas electives of four weeks or more toward clinical hours. Confirm with your elective office before you book — we’ll provide any documentation they need.
What about medical indemnity insurance?
Your Australian medical school’s PII usually extends to overseas electives, but check the wording. We can arrange top-up cover if needed.
Do I need a visa?
Most of our destinations are visa-on-arrival or e-visa for Australian passport holders. We’ll send you exact instructions once you’ve picked a country.
Can I go with a friend from med school?
Yes — many placements welcome pairs or small groups from the same school. Book together and share accommodation.
When should I book?
By 15 September for a November–February placement. After that, popular destinations and specialties (paediatrics, obs-gynae, ED) start filling up.
