Most medical electives are primarily observation-based, especially at the start. As trust is built with the local team, you may assist with more basic tasks under supervision, with the level of involvement varying by country, by hospital and by your own stage of training. The focus throughout is on safe, ethical learning alongside local staff rather than working beyond your competence — so you should expect to observe, ask questions and gradually take on more where it is appropriate and supervised.
