Frequently asked questions

What is a medical internship abroad?

A medical internship abroad is a structured clinical placement at an overseas hospital where medical, nursing, dentistry, midwifery or physical therapy students observe and assist under local supervision. With Med Trips, every internship is supervised, includes accommodation and in-country support, and medical insurance is included in the program fee.

Is my money protected if my plans change?

Yes — your payments are financially protected, and our flexible booking policy lets you change your dates, with the balance not due until 45 days before departure. You can also spread the fee over 0% interest instalments. As a certified B Corp, we're held to high standards of transparency and fair terms.

How much does a medical internship abroad cost?

A Med Trips internship typically covers a supervised placement, accommodation, medical insurance and in-country support — flights, visa, vaccinations and spending money are extra. See our transparent prices page for current fees by destination and duration, and our funding guide for bursaries, grants and Erasmus+ options.

What is the best country for a medical internship?

The best country depends on your specialty and learning goals. Med Trips runs supervised internships in 12 destinations across Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe — Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tanzania, Ghana and Kenya are the most popular. See our destination guides for what each one teaches best.

How long should my medical internship abroad be?

Most students choose a 2–4 week medical internship; some extend to 6–8 weeks or longer. Two weeks gives a meaningful clinical immersion; longer placements deepen exposure across departments and specialties. The right length depends on your degree requirements, budget and the time you have available.

How do I get funded for a medical internship?

Most students fund their internship through a mix of royal-college and university bursaries, charitable trusts, Erasmus+ Traineeship (Italy and Spain), the Gilman Scholarship (US) and fundraising. See our full funding guide for UK, US, Italy and Spain students, plus a step-by-step fundraising hub with events, sponsors and online profiles.

Do I need medical experience to join an internship?

Med Trips internships are open to current healthcare students — medicine, nursing, dentistry, midwifery, physical therapy and allied fields — and to pre-med students. Exact entry requirements vary by specialty and hospital; we confirm what you need before you book.

Will my internship count towards my degree?

Many universities accept a Med Trips internship for credit. We provide a completion certificate plus the supervision, placement and risk-assessment documentation your medical or nursing school needs to approve the trip — always confirm with your internship coordinator first.

Is a medical internship abroad safe?

Safety is built into every Med Trips internship: vetted hospitals and accommodation, a 24/7 in-country coordinator, airport pickup and a pre-departure briefing. We are a member of WYSE Travel Confederation and a certified B Corporation, with safeguarding standards your university can sign off.

Can I come as a group from my university or society?

Yes — we run tailored group medical internships for universities, medical schools and student societies, with custom dates, specialties and supervision. Tell us your numbers and learning objectives and our Groups Team will build a proposal, with institutional invoicing available.

Timing your internship around the US academic year

Three windows account for most US placements:

  • Summer after MS1 or MS2 (June–August) — the busiest window by far, and the one that fills first.
  • MS4 spring (January–April) — after interviews and Match, before graduation.
  • Pre-med and gap year — any month; students building clinical exposure hours before applying.

Across our own bookings, US students book about three months before departure, with January to April the heaviest booking months and June to August the heaviest travel months. If you want a June or July start in a popular specialty, aim to confirm by early spring.

School approval, VSLO and paperwork

An international internship is approved by your own school, not through VSLO — VSLO covers visiting rotations at other US institutions. Send us your school’s form and we complete and return it within three working days, together with:

  • Host hospital confirmation letter naming your supervising physician
  • Program scope-of-practice document
  • Insurance and indemnity summary
  • Signed placement agreement, and a certificate of completion at the end

Will it count toward clinical hours? That is your school’s decision — many recognise international placements of four weeks or more. What about malpractice cover? Your school’s professional liability policy often extends to international placements; check the wording, and we can arrange top-up cover if it does not.

Prices in US dollars

Every price on this site is shown in USD by default — you can switch currency from the top bar if you prefer. A booking fee holds your placement and the balance is due 45 days before you start. Card, bank transfer and PayPal are all accepted from the US.
