Practical planning

Placements run year-round and typically last 2 to 8 weeks (minimum 2). Every Med Trips placement is supervised in a vetted hospital or clinic and supported by an in-country team, and the programme fee covers your placement, student-friendly accommodation, insurance and 24/7 in-country support, along with pre-departure guidance, help with your university paperwork and an in-country orientation on arrival. Flights and daily spending money are normally your own responsibility.

What work will I get to do in the Medical Elective Placement?

As part of the Medical Elective Placement in Nepal, your role will be strictly observational and shadowing-based, in line with local medical regulations. This ensures that you learn safely while respecting the country’s healthcare standards.

Your elective experience will include:

• Shadowing local doctors and nurses during ward rounds, outpatient consultations, and procedures.

• Observing how patients are diagnosed and treated in government and private hospitals, as well as in smaller healthcare clinics.

• Witnessing the management of conditions common in Nepal, such as tuberculosis, respiratory illnesses, maternal health issues, and tropical diseases.

• Rotating across different hospital departments—such as general medicine, pediatrics, maternity, surgery, and emergency care—to gain a broad overview of Nepal’s healthcare system.

Please note: Direct, hands-on patient care or independent medical procedures are not permitted. Your internship is designed to be an educational, observational experience, giving you an in-depth understanding of healthcare delivery in a developing country.
