The experience is supervised throughout by assigned nurses and mentors, who oversee your activity and keep it appropriate to your level — so it suits student nurses who want genuine clinical exposure within safe, clearly defined boundaries.

What you can observe on placement

Depending on the hospital and your stage of training, you may rotate through settings such as intensive care, theatres, paediatrics, maternity, psychiatry and community outreach. Your role is to observe care and to support basic tasks under supervision; you should not expect to carry out nursing procedures, administer medication or provide independent patient care unless a specific programme explicitly supports it. Much of the value comes from seeing how nurses deliver quality care with limited equipment, using creative problem-solving, strong patient-and-family relationships and clear communication.

What a supervised placement involves

You will be fully supported by assigned nurses and mentors who supervise your activity and ensure your experience is safe and suited to your level. Alongside the clinical exposure, you will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and engage with patients and families across language and cultural barriers, refining the compassionate communication and teamwork that nursing relies on every day.

How long you go for shapes the experience. Two weeks gives a focused first look at one or two departments; four weeks or more lets you rotate more widely and settle into a team. Placements run year-round, so you can fit the trip around your studies.
