If you are a medical student looking for Medical Elective Placement in Europe, then this is your chance to shadow doctors in Greece, for up to 40 hours per week, in state-of-the-art hospitals and clinics. This specially curated healthcare internship program is compliant with the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) regulations on medical observation.
As a Medical Elective Placement in Greece, you'll be shadowing English-speaking local medical professionals, rotating through a range of medical departments & specialties to gain practical knowledge. Being a part of this medical mission trip, you will also get to closely observe and experience the European healthcare system, gain an intercultural perspective, and boost your skills.
The Medical Elective Placement in Greece locations are in Athens & Thessaloniki, and you can choose to do the internship for a minimum of 2 weeks up to 12 weeks, as per convenience.

The working hours for the interns in the program are usually Monday to Friday - 8 AM to 4 PM. Weekends are off for sightseeing and rest.

Participants will gain first-hand exposure to the daily workings of a hospital or clinical setting, observing healthcare professionals in action and exploring the many facets of patient care. Highlights include:
- Shadowing doctors, surgeons, and nurses during consultations, diagnostic procedures, and treatments.
- Rotating through multiple departments to develop a broad and well-rounded understanding of medical practice.
- Learning under the mentorship of experienced professionals who provide insights and guidance throughout the program.
- Tailoring the placement to align with your personal interests and career aspirations.
As a medical intern in Greece, you'll get the chance to shadow and observe medical procedures up close, alongside doctors, surgeons, nurses, and other staff members. You can give a preference of the departments you wish to rotate in. The following departments are available :-

Please note that interns can give their preference of the choice of departments for rotation. However, final allocation is at the discretion of the hospital and local team.
This will be a great opportunity for medical students, to gain first-hand experience while shadowing the professionals. You'll also be part of the daily routine in different departments and specialties. The shadowing program is set up to rotate through all the major departments, and it can be adjusted based on what you're most interested in.
This program is designed as a shadowing internship, meaning participants will not perform any hands-on medical procedures. The emphasis is on observation, gaining insights into clinical practice, and learning through close interaction with seasoned healthcare professionals.

The medical internship in Greece is meant for all pre-med and medical students. You should have finished at least one year of college with a major in a science-related field like biology, chemistry, neuroscience, or physics. It's important to really like medicine and be dedicated to watching both surgical and non-surgical procedures.

Airport Pickup
Interns in Greece need to arrive on Sunday as accommodation is covered from the Sunday night before the Monday start date .Upon arrival, interns will be welcomed and transferred to the accommodation.
Orientation
Before you arrive, you'll get a welcome email with information about the city and the host site. You'll also receive an interactive map showing important places. We'll create a WhatsApp group where you can ask questions before you arrive and during your internship. When you get here, we'll give you an orientation on the apartment and how to use public transportation.
Accommodation and Meals
The apartments are fully furnished with everything you need like appliances, kitchenware, and even a washing machine. You'll share the apartment with 1 to 4 interns of the same gender from different programs. Each apartment might have single beds or double beds, with 1 to 3 rooms in total. You'll share a common bathroom, kitchen, and living room. All apartments are in residential areas near the subway and close to supermarkets, restaurants, and cafes. It takes about 30 minutes by subway to get to the host site.
The last night of the accommodation is the Friday night of the final week, leaving interns free to depart on Saturday. Extra nights of accommodation can be arranged in advance, if requested, and are subject to availability.
Meals are not included in the internship and interns have access to affordable supermarkets to purchase supplies or can eat out and enjoy the world famous Greek cuisine.

Who can apply for the program?

Interns must be 18 years or older at the beginning of the program. Pre Medical students, Medical and Nursing students can apply for this internship/elective. Participants joining the Medical internship program need to provide additional documents such as Resume/CV, Passport copy etc, details of which will be provided. You must be physically fit and in good health at the time of joining the program.

What kind of hospital/clinical experience will I get?

Placements are primarily observation-based but tailored to student level (pre-med, nursing, or medical). Students shadow professionals in departments such as surgery, pediatrics, emergency, physiotherapy, OBGYN, and more. All students need to give preference of 3-4 departments of their choice. Depending on the preference and internship/elective duration department allocation shall be done.

Can I perform medical procedures?

Due to local regulations and ethical standards, students will not perform hands-on procedures. However, they will observe, learn, and gain insight into patient care, local health systems, and medical practices.

Visa requirements depend on your nationality and destination. We provide guidance during the pre-departure process.

Is airport transfer included?

Participants are provided pickup from Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH). Interns are required to arrive on the Sunday between 9am and 6pm. Pickups outside this time frame can be arranged at an additional charge.

How do I get around during the program?

Interns in Athens use local public transport such as taxis and metro train for commuting between the accommodation and hospital placement.

What are the recommended inexpensive airline options to fly to Greece?

For intra-Europe travel, the cheapest are Ryanair, Wizz Air, easyJet, Volotea, and sometimes Aegean if you need a bag. For long-haul, the budget-friendly options are Scoot (from Singapore), Pegasus (via Istanbul), and TAP (via Lisbon), or just combine a cheap long-haul into Europe with a low-cost European carrier for the last leg.
