Day 1 - Sunday – Arrival Day - Welcome to Tanzania!
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) where a Med Trips representative will greet you. You’ll be transferred to the volunteer accommodation in Arusha, your home for the duration of the trip. Settle in, meet your local hosts and fellow participants, and get ready to begin your Tanzanian journey.

Day 2 - Monday – Orientation & Arusha City Tour
Kick off your program with a detailed orientation and local city tour. Our in-country coordinators will brief you on local customs, safety guidelines, and project expectations. You’ll explore Arusha’s key landmarks — local markets, banks, cafés, and restaurants — and have time to arrange local SIM cards and complete any required work permit procedures.

Day 3 - Day 5 - Tuesday to Friday – Medical Placement

Start your medical or healthcare placement at one of our partner hospitals or clinics in and around Arusha.
You’ll have the chance to:

  • Observe and shadow local doctors and nurses

  • Assist with basic clinical tasks where appropriate

  • Gain a deeper understanding of Tanzania’s healthcare system and public health challenges

This placement provides valuable learning and exposure to global healthcare practices, ideal for students pursuing medicine, nursing, or related fields.

Day 6 and Day 7 - Saturday & Sunday – 2-Day Safari Adventure

Enjoy a weekend of adventure with a 2-day camping safari to Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara National Park — two of Northern Tanzania’s most stunning reserves.

Day 1: Safari in Tarangire National Park – famous for elephants and baobab trees.

Day 2: Explore Lake Manyara National Park – home to flamingos, hippos, and tree-climbing lions.

Accommodation is in shared safari tents/camps, with all meals, mineral water, park entry fees, and transportation included. Return to Arusha on Sunday evening.

Day 8 and Day 9 - Monday & Tuesday – Continue Your Placement

Resume your hospital or clinic placement and continue gaining valuable experience under professional supervision.In the evenings, explore Arusha, visit the Maasai Market for souvenirs, or relax with your group. A Med Trips social evening and goodbye party will be arranged at the accommodation.

Day 10 - Wednesday – Materuni Waterfalls & Coffee Experience

Travel to Materuni Village, located in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. Enjoy a scenic hike to the stunning Materuni Waterfalls, where you can take a dip in the refreshing natural pool.Afterwards, enjoy a traditional local lunch and take part in a hands-on coffee-making experience — from harvesting to roasting and brewing. A perfect day to unwind and soak in Tanzania’s natural beauty!

Day 11 and Day 12 - Thursday & Friday – Medical Outreach Camp

Take part in a community-based Medical Outreach Camp organized by the local Med Trips team. The camp will be set up in a rural community outside Arusha where healthcare access is limited.

Villagers from the local community will receive free medical checkups and consultations. Local doctors and Med Trips participants will work together to provide basic health assessments, share hygiene education, and assist with vital checks and record-keeping.

This experience allows you to make a direct impact on community health, develop teamwork skills, and better understand healthcare delivery in resource-limited settings.

In the evening, enjoy a Farewell Dinner with your team and local coordinators — a celebration of your efforts and the friendships formed.

Day 13 -  Saturday – Departure Day

Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your return flight home. Depart Tanzania with unforgettable memories, valuable clinical experience, and a new global perspective on healthcare.

Placement Requirements

Placement Requirements

All group members must be 18 years or older at the time of joining the Tanzania Group Medical experience. You should have an open mind and flexible attitude for working in a new and different environment. All students must provide additional documents such as Resume/CV, statement of motivation, list of preferred departments at least 45 days prior to joining the program. The Group medical experience is open for current students or recent graduates of medical studies program. This includes pre-medical, medicine, nursing, public health, pre-nursing students. Students in Pre medical courses such as biomedical science and health sciences are also eligible to join the program. The trip is available for faculty led group trips from university/college students as well as a group of friends coming together to do the trip.

Airport Transfer
Airport transfers (bothways) will be provided to the group from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)

Orientation
Each group shall be provided with a comprehensive orientation on the next day after arrival.The Orientation session covers areas like, local Thai culture, greetings, locations, transportation etc. Groups are also given a half day city tour of Chiang Mai and are given a cultural welcome dinner to make them feel immersed in the local culture.

Accommodation

Group members are accommodated in a dedicated intern/volunteer house in Arusha. Housing is in shared rooms (private room upgrades may be available on request).

The house features:

  • Comfortable shared rooms with options for private upgrades

  • A staffed kitchen with freshly prepared meals

  • A spacious common area for relaxation and socializing

  • Games such as snooker and table tennis

  • Wi-Fi access throughout the house

  • CCTV surveillance and a security guard on duty

Located around 25 minutes on foot from Arusha’s main clock tower, the accommodation offers a safe and convenient base for interns. Laundry can be done by hand in the designated washing area or provided to helpers at an additional cost.

The house has the capacity to accommodate more than 50 participants, creating a vibrant and social environment.

Local Transportation
All local transportation for transfers to hospitals, sightseeing locations and safari trip are included in the program. The group members will need to use local taxis for any personal commute outside the program itinerary.

Throughout the elective, students collaborate closely with experienced healthcare professionals, participating in daily routines and gaining firsthand insight into the challenges and rewards of working in a medical setting. This hands-on experience is invaluable for anyone looking to build a strong foundation in healthcare.

We also arrange Dentistry Elective placements in Tanzania. Dentistry interns work in the dental department of hospital placements in Arusha. The placements are suitable for dental students looking to do a Dental Elective Program in Africa and gain valuable knowledge and experience by working under the supervision of dentists and dental assistants.

The local team in Arusha also organizes community outreach events in local communities, providing healthcare services to those who lack access to proper medical assistance. Most of these outreach events are conducted in village communities when there are a sufficient number of medical interns in the program. A minimum number of participants is required to carry out community outreach activities.

St. Elizabeth Hospital, commonly referred to as "Kwa Father Babu" in Arusha, is situated in the Ngarenaro suburb. As a Council Designated Hospital, St. Elizabeth serves as a referral center for local dispensaries and health centers within the Arusha municipality. Other hospitals also direct patients to St. Elizabeth for specialized services that they may not provide.

St. Elizabeth is one of the three largest hospitals in Arusha, offering both inpatient and outpatient services.
