A physical therapy placement abroad is a supervised clinical placement where physical therapy students observe rehabilitation in a different healthcare setting, working alongside qualified physiotherapists and wider medical teams. It is a way to see how physical therapy is practised beyond the NHS — often with a different case mix and different resources — while developing the communication, teamwork and cultural awareness that modern practice depends on.

Who physical therapy placements abroad suit

Placements are open to undergraduate and postgraduate physical therapy students, to recent graduates seeking global experience, and to pre-university students exploring a career in rehabilitation or global health. Because they are structured to meet academic internship requirements for most UK and international courses, they can form part of your official placement when agreed in advance. The learning is observational: you watch experienced physiotherapists assess patients and plan treatment, and you build clinical reasoning by discussing what you see — rather than delivering treatment yourself.

How to choose your destination

What a supervised placement involves

Physical Therapy placements abroad are observational. You will shadow qualified physiotherapists across inpatient, outpatient and community settings, observing assessment, treatment planning and patient management, and learning how care is adapted where funding and equipment are limited. You should not expect to provide hands-on treatment or manual therapy; your role is to observe, learn and discuss, always within the scope set by your supervising team.

Placements run year-round, and most students choose between two and eight weeks. A shorter stay works well for a focused look at one setting, while a longer placement lets you follow patients through a course of rehabilitation and see how progress is tracked. Whatever the length, the value lies in watching experienced clinicians reason through cases and in seeing rehabilitation delivered in a very different context to home.

Planning and approval

Most UK and international universities accept a Med Trips placement as part of your physical therapy internship when it is agreed in advance, and we provide the documentation your course may require. Your fee covers the placement, accommodation, insurance and in-country support, plus pre-departure guidance; flights and daily spending are usually your own. Observation hours for your DPT application

Most PTCAS-based DPT programs require documented observation hours under a licensed physical therapist. An internship abroad gives you concentrated PT observation and hands-on exposure across settings — inpatient, outpatient and rehab — in a few focused weeks.

Check before you book: some programs require hours under a US-licensed PT, so confirm your target schools accept international observation hours toward PTCAS. Either way, the experience strengthens your application and your clinical reasoning.
