What a supervised placement involves

Most medical internships are primarily observation-based, especially at the start. As trust is built with the local team, you may assist with more basic tasks under supervision, with the level of involvement varying by country, by hospital and by your own stage of training. The focus throughout is on safe, ethical learning alongside local staff rather than working beyond your competence — so you should expect to observe, ask questions and gradually take on more where it is appropriate and supervised.

How long you go for shapes what you get out of it. Two weeks is enough for a focused first look at a single department; four weeks or more gives you time to settle into a team, follow patients through their care and see a wider range of cases. Placements run year-round, so you can align the trip with your university’s internship period.

How a medical internship abroad fits your US training

Where you are in the US pathway shapes what you get out of a placement:

• Pre-med undergraduates — concentrated, hands-on clinical exposure and physician shadowing hours that strengthen an AMCAS or AACOMAS application, in settings you rarely reach as a US undergrad.
• Medical students (MS1/MS2) — a clinical summer between preclinical years, ahead of Step 1 and the wards.
• MS4s — a clinical rotation abroad after interviews and Match, before graduation.

An international placement is arranged directly with your own school, not through VSLO — VSLO covers visiting rotations at other US institutions.

What you’ll do on a medical internship abroad

You shadow and assist under a named supervising physician across ward rounds, outpatient clinics and, where appropriate, the OR — with exposure to advanced-presentation pathology, infectious and tropical disease, and high-volume care you won’t see in a US teaching hospital.

Will it count toward clinical hours?

For pre-meds, clinical and shadowing hours are self-reported on AMCAS/AACOMAS — keep a log and we provide a certificate of completion. For enrolled students, your school decides; many recognize international placements of four weeks or more. Confirm with your dean’s or global-health office before you book, and we’ll supply any documentation they need.
