Planning an overseas medical trip can feel overwhelming at first. Where should you go? What kind of clinical experience will you get? How do you make sure everything is safe and well-organised?
At Med Trips, we’ve spent years creating structured, secure, and rewarding programs for medical and healthcare students across Asia and Africa. From the moment you register to the day you return home, we provide expert guidance, hands-on support, and a clear process that removes the guesswork—leaving you free to focus on learning and enjoying your trip.
Here’s how the whole journey works:
1. Choose Your Destination
We work exclusively in handpicked destinations across Asia and Africa, each chosen for the quality of clinical experience they offer and the richness of the cultural setting.
You’ll have the opportunity to:
Experience different healthcare systems first-hand.
Observe a wide variety of medical cases not commonly seen at home.
Explore exciting countries in your free time—whether it’s beaches, mountains, wildlife, or historic landmarks.
Not sure where to go? Our experienced team will take time to understand your academic requirements, your career goals, and your personal preferences, then recommend destinations that will fit you best. Our program advisors would be happy to help, please write to hello@medtrips.co.uk
Flexibility:
Departures are available year-round.
Placements start from just one week, with the option to extend.
You can travel solo, with a friend, or even as part of a larger group.
We’ll then guarantee your hospital placement and accommodation within a week after you submit your documents.
The remaining balance can be paid in manageable instalments before you travel. We need full payment 45 days before your start date.
Booking early gives you the best choice of dates, departments, and destinations. Many students secure their place 6–12 months in advance, especially for busy summer months.
Once registered, you’ll be assigned a dedicated Trip Coordinator. This person is your point of contact from start to finish and will guide you through every stage:
Placement planning: Choose your preferred departments (e.g. surgery, paediatrics, emergency medicine, OB-GYN, etc.) and request multiple rotations if you wish.
Travel logistics: We’ll help you with flights, visas, vaccinations, insurance, and any paperwork required by your university.
Cultural preparation: Access our online portal, where you’ll find packing guides, destination handbooks, and language videos to help you settle in faster.
By the time you leave, you’ll know exactly where you’re going, what to expect in the hospital, and how to make the most of your free time abroad.
When you land, a member of our local in-country team will be waiting for you at the airport. You’ll be taken straight to your accommodation, where you’ll meet other MedTrips participants.
Within your first 24 hours you’ll receive a comprehensive orientation covering:
Local culture and customs
Safety guidelines
Transport and navigating the city
Hospital expectations and introductions
This ensures you feel comfortable and supported right from the start.
5. Accommodation & Meals
All Med Trips participants stay in safe, comfortable, and fully catered accommodation. Unlike homestays, our accommodation is designed specifically for students and young professionals.
Shared houses: Stay with other students from around the world—building friendships and networks.
Meals included: Daily breakfast and dinner are freshly prepared by local chefs, with options to suit dietary needs.
Amenities: Wi-Fi, communal lounges, study areas, and secure bedrooms.
Our houses become a real hub of cultural exchange, where evenings are often spent sharing stories from the hospital or planning weekend adventures.
6. Hospital Placement
Your placement is at the heart of your trip. We partner with trusted hospitals and clinics where you’ll gain exposure to real-world medical experience.
What to expect:
Structured schedules: Monday to Friday placements with guaranteed hours.
Department rotations: Work across multiple specialties if you choose.
Supervised learning: Clinical supervisors are briefed about your arrival and objectives before you start.
Hands-on opportunities: Depending on your training level, you may observe or assist with basic procedures (always under supervision) and this is not guaranteed and is on the descrition of the practising doctor in country.
You’ll see medical conditions and approaches that differ from what you’re used to at home, deepening your understanding of global health challenges.
7. Free Time & Travel
After placements, your afternoons, evenings, and weekends are yours to enjoy. Our destinations are chosen not just for medical value, but also for adventure and culture.
Examples:
Sri Lanka: Tropical beaches, wildlife safaris, and tea plantations.
Nepal: Himalayan treks, ancient temples, and river rafting.
Ghana: Vibrant markets, national parks, and historic forts.
Many students travel together, forming lifelong friendships along the way.
8. Ongoing Support
From start to finish, you’re supported at every step:
UK team: Helps with planning, preparation, and university paperwork.
Local teams: Available 24/7 in-country to ensure your safety and wellbeing.
Hospital supervisors: Provide day-to-day guidance and feedback during placements.
This triple layer of support ensures you’re never left alone to figure things out.
